Why soccer?
Soccer is a rare and unifying theme in Africa, and an integral part of cultures around the world. It is something so positive and powerful that in most places simply arriving at a field with a soccer ball wins you immediate friendships and access into a local community. Even in the most impoverished areas, soccer teams and leagues are everywhere, with professional soccer players serving as heroes and role models to all of the children who watch them play. Grassroot Soccer works with these very role models - pro players, coaches, and youth players themselves - to communicate the message about healthy behavior and the risks of HIV. By developing an internationally recognized HIV prevention curriculum, Grassroot Soccer has shown that they can dramatically increase awareness, change behaviors, and turn the tide against HIV.

Why should you participate?
This tournament is a way to raise awareness, raise funds, show your soccer skills, have fun, and most importantly, fight AIDS. Moreover, this event is also about inspiring the next generation of students to actively seek a solution to the AIDS pandemic. Thus far, the Lose the Shoes' global effort has raised over $150,000 since its inception in 2006, involving over 15,000 students across 80 schools. Your participation will go a long way in not only supporting a valuable organization, but also impacting the lives of children all over the African continent.
